So that's what it is!

Hiya, all.

I read this article today on mnbc, which discusses the forgetfulness many moms experience after having children, and found it very interesting.

I was particularly tickled by the one where 'mom' cut up her husband's grilled chicken into tiny little pieces 'because that's what a mom does'. Right? Right :). I very nearly did that to my husband's omelette this morning.

"There’s probably not a new mother alive who can’t identify and share a smile with Andi Silverman’s stories of memory lapses. Like the time she went shopping and left her groceries in the store. Or when she went on vacation with her two small children and forgot the diapers.

With two toddler sons, Nate, 3, and Teddy, 2, commanding her total attention, this kind of forgetfulness is to be expected, say medical experts. They even have a name for it — “momnesia.”

“It’s a state of the female brain that is a bit forgetful after she’s had a baby,” Dr. Louann Brizendine told TODAY correspondent Savannah Guthrie."

So that's the word - momnesia !

Passed on from generation to generation!

Post by Rachel

I have several..no actually many remedies regarding colds and flu passed on right from my great grandmothers, grandmothers, mother, mil, aunts and so on.. Everybody considers it their right to pitch in with their remedies.. Some of the remedies work ..some don't and neither of them are amused when you tell them that their remedy didn't work..

Anyways if your child or for matter even an adult is suffering from cough, what you need to do is to roast a few cloves of garlic and then mash it..and apply the paste on the throat..It does cause a relief…

For a nose block, roast a pepper corn and let the child inhale the smoke.

A spoon of honey a day is healthy for the child. And now since L is three, I mix a little turmeric powder in the honey when she has a cold or any other symptoms.

I soak two almonds the previous night and get her to eat them the next morning. This has increased her immunity. If it has to be force fed..do it..I powder the soaked almonds and mix it in the honey and make her have it.

Ginger mashed mixed with honey is also another remedy to prevent cold.

If the child has trouble sleeping because of a congested chest, mash garlic into ghee and massage it onto their chest and back before they are put to sleep.

There are more and it would take days to type it all in..

These are some of the most useful and very productive at that..

Toy recalls - Toxic Toys

I am sure we all have heard about the lead paint related toy recalls, and the disturbing stories around the use of banned substances in toys and the harmful effects on children - aqua dot story being the most recent one.

Well, there's another issue that we don't often hear about - thanks to the powerful toy industry lobbying in America, consumers are kept in dark and we become victims of consumerism. This one's about the use of legal toxins such as Phthalates.

This article discusses Phthalates in toys and how California is the only state in the country to pass a bill prohibiting the sale of phathalate toys.

http://mobile.thenation.com/docmobile.mhtml?i=20071105&s=schapiro

Consumer Products Safety Commission, CPSC is the government agency that regulates the industry. They regularly update on their website, all the toys that have been recalled. Here's the list so we know what's been recalled so far:

http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/toy.html

Didn't know modern day evil (narakasura) could come in the form of toys in order to hurt our children. Let's try and stay enlightened this Diwali on the various forces of evil around us so we know best how to protect our children safe and healthy! Hope you all had a wonderful Diwali! :-)

Help Wanted...

(This post by Sandeepa of Bong Mom's Cook Book)
Only a few days ago I had gloated about the “pleasure” in doing everything by ones self for the kids. The blog is jinxed as Kodi’s Mom would say and I am in desperate need of help now. Little S is sick with some viral infection, fevers are running as high as 102F/103F. It’s been like this since Monday midnight. Me and D has been alternating at home. I have no clue how I will manage the next week. Though my hours at work are less, I have to be physically present there at least if I don’t want to blow up all my leaves. The hubby has some people/client coming in next week and he can take off a day and half at the most. Sending S to school is out of question. Even if the fever goes down, she will be very weak because of her “satyagraha” activities. So I will in no circumstances send her to school next week.

The fever has made little S very clingy too. She tries to be cheerful in between but rest of the time she wants to lie down in the crook of my arms. So I lie and think of what I can write in my blog but never get around to writing it.

Also since I have a slight (ahem !) case of OCD, in middle of all this chaos I want to dust the top of the dresser and at the back of my head I have a thought that I haven’t cleaned up the stove top yet.

And what do I want most in such a situation? I want S to be in the comfort of home for at least 2 weeks even when she is better and I don't know how this can be accomplished. I also want some caring person who can watch her at the comfort of my own home or at least take care of the home, for just 3-4 hours while me & the hubby can fleet in and out of work. I see the smirk on your face, the glint in your eyes, the “I told you so”. Ok, but I do not know of any one who meets the norms so it’s going to be me or the Dad, but yes “Help” would have “Helped”…

We are just back from the ER since the fever was really high and the ped had taken the evening flight out to the golden days of vacation. All is fine it seems and there is some kind of viral going on causing high fever for several days. So the liitle girl is back on Ibuprofen.

Some lessons learnt in the process:

This is the first time S is running such a high fever and that too for so many days. So we got a little worried today. But it seems with certain viral infection fever can go up to 103F/104F for several (5-7) days. This is accompanied with loss of appetite and some body aches

Fluids, fluids and fluids. Easier said than done. Try giving a cranky, sick child fluid that has high calorie value and she is going to throw it all over you. But still try you must. The Doc said to give stuff like popsicle, frozen yogurt etc. too. I am not used to giving a sick child with stuffed nose, popsicles from the freezer but it seems to be ok. Also I was avoiding the milk though S wanted it, but again the Doc said to let her have it

No need to force feed a sick child though fluids are extremely important. Listening to my Ma I have tried feeding S Macher Jhol-Bhat (very light fish curry and rice), khichuri and lots of other things. All in vain and precious time was spent in cooking up such things. All she had was a little noodles smeared in Ketchup. It is very good if you can feed and the child wants to eat, else giving high calorie drinks might help

A bath helps. The ice pack on the forehead helps and the bath definitely helps too.

ER can be fine. I generally have a fear of all things medical. So when the Doc said I should take S to the ER I panicked. But it was fine actually. The hospital had a separate pediatric ER and it was cheerful and happy.

P.S: Does anyone know of any agency or something from where help can be hired sporadically ?

To be continued, so watch out in a day or two....

Sunscreen Recommendations anyone?

Hi Moms,

I know all the virtues of sunscreen and hurray summer is here full blast! Last year I went with Neutrogena SPF 45 for my daughter, but just last week for some reason I applied some on myself. It felt sticky and hot and unpleasant on my skin. (and yes, I did check the expiry date)And my sunscreen applied fingers happened to touch my eyes for a second and my eyes burned and burned. I am sure a 2 yr old will touch her eyes, etc while playing.

Now is this just the way all suncreens are? Any recommendation from all you other moms about which brand I should use? I have seen Coppertone. BananaBoat, Neutrogena, Aveeno, and a many other brands in the stores. Is any one brand better than others? Other than SPF is there anything I should check in a suncreen before buying?

Spring Food, Japanese Lunchboxes and Fenugreek

I am sure you are all wondering what do all these have in common. Well I hope it is ok to inform you here at DesiMomz that these are the latest articles on The Daily Tiffin.

Many of you probably know the gorgeous Nandita, she is doing a current series called "Inside The Indian Household." This week she discusses Fenugreek and gives a couple of her great recipes.
A new member to our team, JG has written a great introductory article for our Tiffin Tuesday session. JG talks about The Art of Japanese Lunchboxes. It's not only about Japanese food but about the concept of preparing healthy lunch boxes for your kids.
Lastly, I wrote a short piece on fruit and vegetables of the season. Spring Food discusses a few great fruit and vegetables that are now appearing in our produce sections and markets. Check it out and I would really love it if some of you would add your own fruit/veg of the season to complete the list.

Hope you enjoy the articles.

Organic or Commercial - What Products Do You Use to Feed You Kids/Family?

I was wondering. When you buy food for your family do you go for organic/locally grown products or commercial. I have been always very aware of the foods I eat, however, when Soeren was born I really took a closer look at what we were eating. As I read and researched many things surprised me and as I learned from what I was reading I also started slowly switching the type of foods I was buying. I would look for locally or organic products. I shopped for my fruit, vegetables more at the Farmer's market or organic shops rather than at grocery stores.
When Soeren started eating solids, I cooked almost only organic vegetables and fruit for him. That was five years ago when the "organic trend" had just started. Ever since then many researches and studies have been made that organic food is indeed healthier as it contains less pesticide and toxins. Today, when we buy fruit vegetables, diary and meat products, we still opt for organic and locally grown products. We have been on an "organic" diet consciously for five years. We do not buy organic products blindly though - only those that really make a difference, like fruit, vegetables, meat and diary products.

Out of my own experience I will say we do feel better. I myself have noticed more energy in myself (if that is ever possible LOL!) But I see the biggest evidence in my son. In comparison to my friends who chose commercial food, Soeren is really healthier and fitter. He does not suffer from allergies and is not ill at the slightest sneeze. I am not saying that this is all due to eating organic food but I believe it contributes to our health - and not to mention our environment.

Over at the Daiy Tiffin I had written a series of articles about Organic food. I would be very interested in your opinion about the articles on the DT and here I am keen to know if you use organic or commercial and why.

Urinal infections in kids

(This post is by Swapna of susarlas kitchen.)

Hi all..
Today here i want to talk about the urinal infections in kids.

At first i also thought that Kids won't get these type of infections. But later i was proved wrong..With own experience with my daughter. Now she is absolutely fine as she undergone all the medication and all.

So here i am giving u my experience and some suggestions to all of u moms..

HOW IT OCCURS:

The urinary tract infection will be caused by a bacteria. We can't say why?Mostly in baby girls it may occur.

Actually in some kids the pump which takes the urine from the kidney to the urinary tract will be in reverse direction also...means the urine will goes back to the kidney again..can u believe this..i got all this news from the pediatrician who diagnosed my kid. This problem will go away with their age..But with some regular tests and we have to take care of it..Because of the reverse direction there is a chance of getting the kidney infection also..

SYMPTOMS:

  • frequent fevers...
  • Vomiting..
  • Bad smell in the urine..
  • Irritation when urinating..
  • Child crying when going for urination..
WHAT TO DO:

There is no need to worry because in these days so many medications are
there .
If ur child is suffering from any of the above symptoms ...immediately do the urine examination.Don't neglect.if the urine has bacteria..they do the culture test for it.It tells which bacteria caused the particular infection.

Then take ur kid to a doctor .They will give some antibiotic syrup by watching the report.
There will be protocol of tests which ur kid has to undergo..Some will be painful ...but as i said already don't neglect. If u do that u will be the one to suffer along with ur child.

By doing all the tests and using the medicines as supposed by the doctor ur child will be free from this infections..

MY SUGGESTIONS:

  • Giving fluids regularly and taking him/her to do urinate will give u a better results.
  • Don't keep the diapers for so long..it may cause the infections.
  • Clean the urethra after the urination.
  • Follow the instructions from the doctor .
  • don't stop the medicine until the doctor told.
There is another suggestion from Trupti of The spicewholovedme.
  • for the girls, especially, as they are more prone to these types of infections, teach them to wipe from front to back after using the washroom...not the other way around- this stops fecal bacteria from entering the Urinary canal.

Of course, washing hands thoroughly afterwards..applies to all of us.
If u want more info on this read HERE and HERE.

Here i have given this information on my experience as i already told...if u feel bad for this i am sorry...

Greetings from one mommy to another!

Hi ladies,

I'm "Shilpa" from Flog & Rosbif, and have been so kindly invited by Sandeepa to contribute to this blog! What an honour! :)

Anyway, I am 30, a Singaporean and have been living in France for coming to 6 years now. My darling beta Joaquim will be 4 in August and is a typical boy - the kind who runs around a lot and is always up to some mischief at any given time, and of course the kind I can't stay mad at for long! :) For the moment, he's quite a handful, so he's the only child I have.

Being a mom is certainly no small role - while it is often rewarding, it can of course be tiring and taxing. (Not that it's any easier being a dad!) I've noticed that most of you are immigrants like me, and I'm sure a lot of you are working moms who don't have the luxury of domestic help and are far away from your own families. So where do you find the time for yourself? Remember, before becoming moms, we were WOMEN with unique personalities and it would be a pity to lose that individuality.

Let's admit it, even if we're happily married, doesn't it feel good to get compliments or admiring looks from strangers, male or female, now and then? :) For me, compliments from my female colleagues mean a lot now especially after I've looked my worst with new-mummy eyebags, stretch marks, overactive oil glands, water retention and a flabby belly I thought I'd never lose (I've not really lost all of it). Sure, appearance isn't everything, but I'm convinced that if you like what you see in the mirror, it's a great way to start your day! :)

What I would like to share today are some of my tips for getting back into shape after having a baby. I'm no fitness expert or nutritionist, but for someone who had been on the light side all my life, I was very frustrated with my postpartum weight for a long time before I learned to "listen" to my body. I'd bought a secondhand treadmill, barbells, a gym ball, a yoga mat and the works, but eventually, I have none of these to thank for going back to my desired weight and staying there.

OK, I shan't be vague and give you the exact figures. At the start of my pregnancy, I weighed 57kg (for a 1.62m frame). My weight shot up to 70kg when I was due, and up until a year ago, I was stuck at 55 to 57 and pretty much satisfied with that. That is of course, until I found some of my old dresses and was dismayed to see the overflowing jelly, which promptly knocked reality back into my head - that I could and should be lighter! I have been weighing 53kg constantly for more than 4 months now and am aiming for less. Err, I have a weakness for Cheetos, so I'll tell you when that happens! :)

So how did I do it? Nothing extraordinary, really. These are some of the major changes I made to my eating and living habits:

1. Drink lots of water. 2 to 3 litres a day is perfect! Simply said, it purges the body of toxins that cause puffiness and hydrates the skin. This is something I preach a lot about to people who ask me my "secret"! :) haha!

2. Remember that you no longer need to eat for two. I don't even think it's necessary to eat for two during pregnancy, but in any case, you do eat more than usual when pregnant, and after having baby, it's quite a tough habit to break.

3. Eat only when hungry. What does that mean? If you usually have dinner at 8pm, do you really need to eat even if you had a late tea-time snack and your stomach isn't growling at 8pm? Eating for the sake of eating is an easy way to put on weight without realising it!

4. Eat several small meals instead of a few heavy ones. Being a small eater before I got pregnant, this was tricky. How small is small? If you often feel bloated after a meal, then I believe that's an indication that you've had "too much". I think gradually reducing your portions one forkful at a time is the easiest way to get there.

5. Give yourself "rewards" once in a while, but space them out and savour them in moderate portions! You now know I snack on junk (Cheetos and the like), heh heh, but do I gulp down a bag at one sitting every single day? No way! If I do go overboard as it is human to do, I make up for it by having a much lighter meal later.

6. Take the stairs instead of the lift, and walk instead of drive where possible. Don't underestimate a daily 10-minute walk! Some activity is better than nothing. I'm actually quite a sedentary person, but I take public transport to work and lug groceries home twice every week (not only for the sake of my figure, but for the environment!). Being a hoarder, my groceries can reach 7 kg per arm (yes, I weighed my purchases once to see how strong I was, hee hee), so it is quite a workout!

There! These are just the major ones I can think of for the moment and I hope they're helpful! Other advice, not limited to moms trying to get back in shape - avoid processed food (cooking your own is always best), read labels, be aware of what goes into what you eat, pig out on healthy stuff like fruits and vegetables and in general think before you eat! :)

Child Health ; Child Allergies

Hello my dear sisters, guess who in Desi momz club today?! ;D

Yes! It's me Asha of Foodies Hope, bringing you my first post here at Desi Momz club which I am proud to be associated with friends like Sandeepa and Indosungod. Hopefully, many more of you mommies will join us here to lend a hand.I am a mom of two and have been one for 16yrs!! No, I am not a doctor but can speak from experience as a mother:)

I usually hesitate to commit to any new projects and bring on more things to do on myself but I thought this club created by Sandeepa for helping young moms with their questions or general info about child rearing appealed to me.I do have 16 yrs of experience as a mom to boot!! So here I am, bringing you a subject close to home.

This article is just for your information, not my opinion or advice to you.For any proper advice or diagnosis of allergies, you have to consult your doctor.Thanks.

Allergies!!!
As most of you know by now,I do suffer from Spring allergies.People who think "oh! few sneezes a day doesn't hurt!" , have no clue what they are talking about!Let me tell you,you will live in a haze day in and day out with medication with dry throat and discomfort which is lot better than living like a zombie without medication!;D
As an adult I can cope somehow, but can you imagine when a child gets affected by these seasonal or food allergies?! So why not educate ourselves about the basics and be aware of Allergic symptoms.

What is Allergy?
Allergy is a physiological reaction caused when the immune system mistakenly identifies a normally harmless substance as damaging to the body.
Normally, the human body defends itself against harmful substances such as viruses or bacteria, but sometimes the defenses aggressively attack usually innocuous substances such as dust, mold, or pollen and the reaction can be mild or even life threatening.

Symptoms that occur in certain seasons are usually caused by specific pollens:
Spring - tree and grass pollen
Summer through fall - weed pollen
Late summer through fall - ragweed pollen.

What are allergic reactions?
An allergic reaction may occur anywhere in the body, in the skin, eyes, lining of the stomach, nose, sinuses, throat, and lungs -- places where immune system cells are located to fight off invaders that are inhaled, swallowed, or come in contact with the skin.

Who is affected by allergies?
Allergies can affect anyone regardless of age or gender. There is a tendency for allergies to occur in families. In susceptible people, factors such as hormones, stress, smoke, perfume, or other environmental irritants may also play a role. Often, the symptoms of allergies develop gradually over a period of time.
Allergy sufferers may become so accustomed to chronic symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, or wheezing, that they do not consider their symptoms to be unusual. Yet, with the help of an allergist, these symptoms can usually be prevented or controlled and quality of life greatly improved.

How is allergy diagnosed?
By skin test, or by blood test by qualified Doctors.

Treatment:
Treatment is first directed at limiting exposure to individual allergens and irritants. When this is not effective, medications are then given."Allergy shots" are given when environmental control and medications still do not adequately control the symptoms.

Basic prevention:
Vacuum the carpet often if you are allergic to Dust mites.Keep the blinds clean and keep the doors and windows closed as much as possible in spring and Summer. If you spend time outside, change the clothes ASAP to avoid spreading pollen inside the house.Wash your hands often.Avoid being outside for too long.

Tricks for feeding medicine to children:
To teach a child to swallow pills: Nearly all children over the age of 5 years can be taught to swallow pills, even when they are bitter.

1. Have a drink of juice or water and a straw ready
2. Simply place the pill on the tongue in the mid-line, as far back as possible.
3. Immediately have the child take a strong suck on the straw to swallow the pill with the fluid.

To prevent eye drops from missing the eye and running down the cheek:

1. Lie down or sit with the head extended over the back of a chair.
2. Face the ceiling directly and pull down the lower lid with a finger below the eye.
3. Hold the bottle vertically above the eye and squeeze out the drop.

Stinging from some antihistamine eye drops can be reduced by keeping the eye drops cold in the refrigerator.

Apart from the seasonal allergies kids can suffer, there are food allergies you have to watch out for as well.

Food Allergy:

What is food allergy?
Food allergy is a physiological reaction caused when the immune system mistakenly identifies a normally harmless food as damaging to the body.
What is the difference between food allergy and food intolerance?
Food allergy causes an immune system response, causing symptoms that range from uncomfortable to life-threatening. Food intolerance does not affect the immune system, although some symptoms may be the same as in food allergy.

What foods most often cause food allergy?

Approximately 90 percent of all food allergies are caused by eight foods:
milk, eggs, wheat, peanuts, soy, Tree nuts, fish, shellfish,Eggs, milk, and peanuts are the most common causes of food allergies in children, with wheat, soy, and tree nuts also included. Peanuts, nuts, fish, and shellfish commonly cause the most severe reactions. Nearly 5 percent of children have food allergies. Although most children "outgrow" their allergies, allergy to peanuts and tree nuts may be life-long.

What are the symptoms of food allergy?
Allergic symptoms may begin within minutes to an hour after ingesting the food. Symptoms can include:vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, hives, swelling, eczema, itching or swelling of the lips, tongue, or mouth, itching or tightness in the throat, difficulty breathing, wheezing, lowered blood pressure, hives, eczema, asthma.

Although hundreds of ordinary substances could trigger allergic reactions, the most common triggers -- called allergens -- are:
pollens, molds, household dust, dust mites and their waste, animal protein (dander, urine, oil from skin), industrial chemicals, foods, medications, feathers, insect stings and cockroaches and their waste.

At this time, no medication is available to prevent food allergy. Treatment involves avoiding the food that causes the symptoms.People with food allergy must be prepared to treat any accidental ingestion of the foods that cause the allergic reaction.

All of the above information are obtained from these wonderful sites which are there to educate the public.Hope you go there and learn about them and for your kids' healthy future by avoiding at least some of the Allergens which are responsible to trigger allergies.
